Progress and Predictions
Early doubling looks like nothing. Bodies predict tomorrow as today plus a little. Act while the photo still looks responsible.
Eleven lessons, eleven fictive places. Each lesson is one Quest in Future Forge with a tutor on the Co-Inventor tab. These pages are the textbook the tutor offers one at a time; the inventing happens in the Forge. Each lesson also adds one piece of the workshop, listed under Forge skill below and explained in the “Now in the Forge” box on that lesson’s last page.
Lesson 1 — The counts that looked fine on Monday
Harborline Walk-in Clinic. Forge skill: The basic loop: read the briefing, talk to the tutor, pick a tech, mint an idea, dock it against a crisis hex, answer one hard question, hold the pathway.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Equal steps vs doubling | Linear adds; doubling multiplies; early doubling sits under the line. | After the Harborline clinic story. | 01 |
| 02 | Almost never in nature | Exponential progress is rare in lived nature; fog is decay, not a childhood drill. | After the two rules; before grains. | 02 |
| 03 | Wheat on the board | The second half outweighs the first. | After nature. | 03 |
| 04 | Fold it again | Enough doublings leave human scale. | After the chessboard. | 04 |
| 05 | Each doubling outweighs the past | The newest step beats the sum of all previous. | After scale. | 05 |
| 06 | Looking backwards from full | At 100% the prior step was 50%; 1% is not failure. | After the sum rule. | 06 |
| 07 | Quiet, then loud | Early doubling looks like noise. | Map to the fridge strips. | 07 |
| 08 | Invent while it is still quiet | A local practice on this floor, not a city fantasy. | Last of lesson 1; invent stays in chat. | 08 |
Lesson 2 — Ordered to last year’s sheet
Harborline Ferry Maintenance Yard. Forge skill: Two acts: the root-cause meter, End turn, and Look Ahead with a real doubling chart.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 09 | Wired for equal steps | Bodies predict tomorrow as today plus a little. | After Chen’s yard story. | 09 |
| 10 | A doubling you can count | Moore’s claim is a measured climb of parts on a chip, not a slogan. | After the wiring. Same chart as Look Ahead. | 10 |
| 11 | Better tools make better tools | Yesterday’s machine helps design tomorrow’s. | After the chart. | 11 |
| 12 | Frozen to today’s science | A freeze can be smart, funded, and still strand the operator. | Map to the award photo. | 12 |
| 13 | Invent a living plan | A yard practice that notices mismatch, not a prophecy. | Last of lesson 2; invent stays in chat. | 13 |
Lesson 3 — The number that missed the flask
Brinewell Teaching Lab. Forge skill: The Timing light: what a frontier tech can honestly do this year, and what a frontier tile costs in Budget and Support.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 | Molecules don’t run on bits | A molecule is the wrong shape for an ordinary computer; weather is not that job. | After Mira’s flask story. | 14 |
| 15 | A tiny piece, not a factory | Honest size is a tiny piece of a molecule, not a drug or a forecast. | After why it matters. | 15 |
| 16 | One race is not the flask | A benchmark win is not Mira’s flask. | After size honesty. | 16 |
| 17 | Ordinary machines stay | Weather and payroll stay on ordinary machines; the minutes are for a molecule-shaped job. | Map to the ribbon-cutting. | 17 |
| 18 | Put the tiny piece on the minutes | Spend the minutes on this tiny piece, limits said out loud. | Last of lesson 3; invent stays in chat. | 18 |
Lesson 4 — The mold photo she still opens
Harborline Claims Office. Forge skill: Local rules as weather, the Lobby button, and the Ethicist’s hard question.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 19 | The photo still has to be opened | A draft is not a decision; process is the scarce piece. | After Yara’s desk story. | 19 |
| 20 | The shrinking never-list | Falling off “never” is not sitting in the chair. | After the photo. | 20 |
| 21 | Process beats the paste | Ordinary person + machine + strong process beats star + paste. | The law that maps to the desk. | 21 |
| 22 | A move nobody scripted | Unscripted help is real; ownership is still a person. | After Kasparov’s Law. | 22 |
| 23 | Invent an owned desk | One claim type, a stop rule, a named owner of the no. | Last of lesson 4; invent stays in chat. | 23 |
Lesson 5 — The demo that froze on a carton
Rookery Hub. Forge skill: Convergence: two docked ideas that speed each other up, and the Learn button.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 | After the draft, a body | After bits, atoms; a body is a bet about the workspace. | After Tomas’s demo. | 24 |
| 25 | Why a human shape | Doors and stairs were built for people. | Then the honest reason. | 25 |
| 26 | Not the default body | Balance costs every second; specialists take the flat-floor cartons. | Before the invent. | 26 |
| 27 | Invent the stairs job | One stair or door; stop on crushed cartons. | Last of lesson 5; invent stays in chat. | 27 |
Lesson 6 — The crate on third shift
North Stack Fulfillment. Forge skill: The other challengers (Mother Nature, Moloch) and what a good answer names.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28 | A body is not a safety mode | A cobot is a safety mode on an arm, not a new body. | After Malik’s crate. | 28 |
| 29 | Specialists already ship | Hundreds of thousands of arms a year, walkers in the hundreds. | Then volume. | 29 |
| 30 | Trailers, tonnes, four legs | Different stations, different bodies. | Map to the trailer mouth. | 30 |
| 31 | Open the crate | One hurting station; no walking demo. | Last of lesson 6; invent stays in chat. | 31 |
Lesson 7 — The names on Rosa’s pad
Reedford Clinic. Forge skill: A multi-tech island and writing how the whole pathway works.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 32 | When the tower is in the river | A message still has to move when wires and towers are gone. | After Rosa’s clinic story. | 32 |
| 33 | Low Earth orbit | Satellites a few hundred kilometres up; many small ones handing the call along. | Then the orbit. | 33 |
| 34 | A dish versus a phone | A dish needs power and sky. A phone can send a slow text with no dish. | Two products. | 34 |
| 35 | Not only one company | Starlink is live; Amazon Leo, OneWeb, and phone-first rivals are in the race. | Honest 2026 limits. | 35 |
| 36 | Invent the first day | How the clinic reaches the hospital and families on day one. | Last of lesson 7; invent stays in chat. | 36 |
Lesson 8 — The curb at Nia’s bakery
Quay Street, Millspan. Forge skill: Rules as the root cause: when to Lobby and when to invent, and the Look Ahead trade-off.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 37 | The curb is the city | A drop-off is seconds. A stall is all day. The scarce piece is the curb. | After Nia’s bakery story. | 37 |
| 38 | You can hail one in some cities | Live in mapped areas in 2026. Not every street. | After the curb. | 38 |
| 39 | Empty miles | About half the miles in one sample had no passenger. | After what is live. | 39 |
| 40 | Leftover lots | Parking can be a huge share of downtown. It does not become housing by itself. | After empty miles. | 40 |
| 41 | Invent the street | Drop-off, wait, one leftover lot. Not a fleet brand. | Last of lesson 8; invent stays in chat. | 41 |
Lesson 9 — The wet wall at Kiln Hall
Kiln Hall, Ashmere. Forge skill: Reading a red hex: “What could help here?” and Coverage meter by meter.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 42 | The wall, not the face | A live model can know a building. That is not a camera on people. | After Mara’s hall story. | 42 |
| 43 | A live model | Last year’s drawing is not a twin. | After the wall. | 43 |
| 44 | What is live in 2026 | Factory plant models exist. A hall is a smaller job. | After a live model. | 44 |
| 45 | Honest limits | Sync is labor. One wet spot is late. | After what is live. | 45 |
| 46 | Invent before Saturday | What to measure, who is told, what is never filmed. | Last of lesson 9; invent stays in chat. | 46 |
Lesson 10 — The stew at Lowbridge Kitchen
Lowbridge Kitchen, Fenn. Forge skill: Budget as a stock: the first island pays for the second.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 47 | The kitchen promised protein | A sack is not a plate. Tuesday stew still has to happen. | After Paz’s stew story. | 47 |
| 48 | Three paths | Plants, fermentation, cells grown in tanks. | After the kitchen. | 48 |
| 49 | What a kitchen can cook in 2026 | Plants and fungus protein are the honest Tuesday paths. | After three paths. | 49 |
| 50 | Honest limits | Taste, names, cost. A sack is not a recipe. | After what a kitchen can cook. | 50 |
| 51 | Invent the plate | Which path, how to cook it, who tastes first. | Last of lesson 10; invent stays in chat. | 51 |
Lesson 11 — The last pasture at Duneport
Rillmouth Works, Duneport. Forge skill: Capstone: run the whole loop with the tutor stepping back.
| Page | Title | Concept (one line) | When the tutor offers it | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 52 | The last pasture | Cheap noon hours can do work a field stake cannot. | After Leah’s story. | 52 |
| 53 | How much land the panels take | Panels take acres locally; at world scale small next to farms. | After why this family. | 53 |
| 54 | Cheap power can make a drink | When noon power is cheap, a real use is making a drink from salt water. | After the land count. | 54 |
| 55 | Honest limits | Brine, membranes, noon-only. Covering the last field is not a cup. | After a drink. | 55 |
| 56 | Invent the cup | Which hours, how they make a drink, who tastes first. | Last of lesson 11; invent stays in chat. | 56 |
Read in order. Invent stays in the Forge, not on these pages. When a run ends, return to the Progress and Predictions module card and open the next lesson.
