Rosa’s clinic cannot call the hospital. The tower by the bridge is in the water. Landlines are dead. Names go on a paper pad. That is the job this lesson is about: a message still has to move when the usual path is gone.

In this course, moving information across distance is one family of technology. After a flood it is not a brochure about connecting the world. It is whether the hospital forty minutes away knows who is sitting in the gym.

Reedford has two things it has not used. A kit in a locked closet that is supposed to talk to the sky, with no password and no power. And a few phones in town that can send a slow text from outside, which nobody told the clinic about.

Once you see calling as a message that needs any path, not a tower, the closet and the teenager’s phone stop being trivia.

The tempting mistake is to treat a fallen tower as the end of calling until the phone company rebuilds it.
