A dish versus a phone

There are two products here. Do not mash them together.

A dish, or a kit in a case, sits outside where it can see the sky and needs electricity. It can give a clinic or a gym a real internet link: maps, forms, a call, if someone can turn it on. Rosa’s closet kit is this kind. The password on the sticky note was part of the system, and so was the outlet that is now dead.

The second product is newer. An ordinary phone talks to a satellite the way it talks to a tower. No extra dish. In 2026 that path carries texts, location sharing, and a few apps. It is not a full cell tower in your pocket. Voice and heavier data are still rolling out.

After a flood, both can matter. A dish that nobody can power is a brick. A phone text that nobody told the clinic about is a missed list of names.

The tempting mistake is to think a phone that texts through the sky already replaces a tower.
