A body is not a safety mode

North Stack’s crate is not a person-shaped demo. Before Malik cuts the straps, one word needs untangling. People say “cobot” as if it were a new kind of body. It usually is not.

A cobot is a collaborative robot: most often the same six-jointed arm you would find behind a cage, allowed to work next to a person because it is limited in force and speed. The body did not change. The permission did. A safety mode is a setting, not a shape.

Lesson 5 asked when a walking, two-armed machine is the honest bet. This lesson asks what to open instead when the station never needed legs at all.

Once body and safety mode are separate ideas, the crate stops looking like a person who did not arrive. It starts looking like a tool for a station.

The tempting mistake is to leave the crate shut because it does not look like a coworker.
