One race is not the flask

Labs have announced that a special machine finished a chosen task faster than a huge ordinary supercomputer. Winning the 100 metres does not mean you have replaced walking. It also does not mean Mira’s tiny piece now matches the flask.

Brinewell does not need to rerun that race. Brinewell needs to not hear “we won a benchmark” as “pour the flask, we have a drug.”

The minutes on the poster are still for a tiny, noisy job on a molecule. A benchmark is a milestone on a curve. It is not the coatings partner’s question.

The tempting mistake is to treat a press headline as a product. A race is evidence the machine is real. The flask is still the class.

That is what lets you keep ordinary machines in the room.
