The cracked coupling
Juno finds a cracked coupling on a Tidewell Works pump. A coupling is the part that joins two rotating or connected components so the pump can operate. The replacement truck will take three weeks, and the line is stopped now.
In this course, Portal means moving between information and physical objects. The Internet of Things moves measurements from equipment into digital records. Additive manufacturing moves in the other direction: it uses a digital design to make a physical object near the place where it is needed.
Tidewell already has a drawing of the part. What it lacks is a safe, usable replacement. Ordering the catalog item may still be the right choice, but it is not the only option when a local shop can make and check an appropriate part.

The question is not “Can any printer make this?” It is “Can Tidewell obtain a part with the right material, dimensions, and strength, and verify it before the pump restarts?”
Common mistake: treating the supplier’s catalog number as the only possible path to a replacement.
First, define how additive manufacturing differs from ordinary machining.
