Every EmTech story attracts surplus meaning. Synthetic biology’s surplus includes salvation narratives (end organ shortage, end extinction, end aging, end hunger) that can be directionally related to real tools and still be false as timelines. This chapter integrates the strongest counter-arguments encountered in research.

Biosecurity and dual use

As synthesis and editing diffuse, the same platforms that make insulin and vaccines easier also lower barriers for bad actors. Mitigations include customer screening by DNA providers, pathogen watch lists, lab culture, and national regulation. None are perfect. A serious account of synbio progress without biosecurity is incomplete. This is not an argument to stop; it is an argument to fund governance at the same seriousness as capability.
Inequality
