A flown hop is not an airline

A battery-electric airplane the size of a small regional airliner has now flown. On Wednesday 12 August 2026 it left a working regional runway, climbed, turned, and came back. The company said so the next day. That is electric flight at airliner physical scale as a flown fact. It is not a ticket. It is not a certified airliner. It is not airline service. Smaller electric airplanes already flew years earlier.

What happened

On 12 August 2026, Heart Aerospace flew the X1 demonstrator from Plattsburgh International Airport (KPBG) in upstate New York. The piloted hop lasted 27 minutes and reached 1,100 feet above the field. The company said the all-electric propulsion delivered more than one megawatt. The profile was taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing. One pilot. Registry N301HX.

On 13 August 2026, Heart published the news from Plattsburgh and Los Angeles. One hop. Two datelines. Not a type-certificate day and not an airline-service day.

Sourced size, from the company: 106-foot wingspan, 76 feet long, more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff, four motors on the wing. Heart calls X1 a full-scale demonstrator meant to test technologies and flight at a size relevant to a regional airliner. The hop used an FAA experimental special airworthiness certificate (announced 23 July 2026). That certificate lets this airplane fly these tests. It does not certify a 30-seat design. It does not let anyone sell seats.

Keep three clocks apart. The flown article is a battery-electric demonstrator. The planned product is a 30-seat hybrid-electric airliner (ES-30), with type certification targeted for 2031 and flight testing of a pre-production article targeted for 2028. Airline service is a third door that nobody holds for this type. Congratulations from airline finance people that week were “potential” and “look forward,” not a 2026 delivery.

This was not the first electric airplane. A two-seat trainer (Pipistrel Velis Electro) received type certification in 2020. An Extra 330LE flew on electric power in 2016. Harbour Air’s eBeaver flew in 2019. A converted Caravan flew in 2020. Eviation Alice flew in 2022. What is new is the size: electric flight at regional-airliner physical scale is now a flown fact.

Heart calls X1 the world’s largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. That is a company claim. It is plausible against those named earlier types. It is not an independent ranking.

Honest limits

  • One hop: 27 minutes, 1,100 feet, same field twice. Taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuver, land.
  • Experimental certificate. This airplane, these tests. Not a type certificate. Not an airline certificate. Not a ticket.
  • Not first electric flight. Trainers and conversions already flew. Velis Electro was type-certified in 2020.
  • The planned 30-seat product is hybrid-electric, with type certification targeted for 2031. That airplane has not flown.
  • “World’s largest” is a company claim, unverified as a ranking.
  • No published distance, leftover battery, or second-flight log in the 13 August release.
  • No passengers. No icing, night, or instrument-flight claim.
  • Public FAA registry for N301HX (fetched 27 August 2026) still showed no type-certificate data sheet and no airworthiness date. Trade press and the company say the experimental certificate exists.
