Cleanup is useful — not a full fix

If every river catch and ocean barrier worked perfectly tomorrow, plastic pollution would still not be “solved.”

  • Production — cleanup does not stop new plastic from being made and leaked.
  • Microplastics — lifting big floating pieces can reduce later breakup; it does not vacuum tiny bits already mixed through the sea.
  • Waste systems — shore sorting, recycling, and local partners decide whether catch becomes material or a relocated pile.
  • Hard questions — ocean surface systems face debates about harm to surface life; scale claims need evidence matched to the claim.
What cleanup does not solve by itself
Cleanup does not stop production, microplastics, weak waste systems, or hard impact questions.

Cleanup can still help wildlife and coasts now. The steelman is not “do nothing until factories change.” It is “do not oversell scooping as the whole fix.”

That honesty is what leaves room to invent better local ways to stop a river mouth from feeding the ocean.
