1. The Catalogue Without an Object

Politics is taught as a list. Regimes to sort. Ideologies to choose. One seminar for justice inside a state, another for relations between states, another for administration. And the deepest cut of all: wealth studied as if power were weather, power studied as if wealth belonged to another department.

Each cut had reasons. Taxonomies are useful first sketches. Domestic vs international tracks a real discontinuity (a monopoly of force inside, none above). Splitting economics from politics let each formalise by holding the other still. The catalogue is not carelessness. It is a set of local simplifications that gave up the object.

The cost stayed invisible while the world the simplifications assumed held: persons were humans, producers were the people provided for, force-holders were the community’s own, rule-writers were us. The intelligence age breaks all four assumptions at once. That is when mislaying the object comes due.

Three operations on one reference

A community keeps a shared reference—settled expectation a departure departs from. Exactly three things are done to it:

The inheritance gave objects to the first two. The writing never got one. Politics is the contest over who holds the pen.

Four jobs jammed into “sovereignty”

One word has done four jobs as if they were one:

Subject	In whose name does the rule run?
Seat	Who may write the rule?
Force	Who enforces it?
Standing	Who counts as an order among orders?

These come apart. A people can be sovereign subject—rule in their name—while the writing seat has passed to a hand they cannot reach. That is Rome. That is what the age threatens. Pull the jobs apart and this paper’s object stands clear: not the person, not the force, not international standing—the seat.

Why now

A community can hand machines cases, programmes, drafts, forecasts—and remain self-governing if it keeps the seat where the rule itself is written. The danger is not that the machine decides badly. It is that the seat passes quietly while every measure improves—because measures lie on an axis orthogonal to freedom.

An account of politics that cannot locate the writing seat cannot see what the age most threatens. The catalogue cannot locate it, because the catalogue was never about the seat.
