4. The Floor
Structure raises a question it cannot answer from machinery alone: force is held by someone and exists for someone. Until we say who, legitimate is a placeholder.
Not a criterion—an identity
Tempting answers are tests: force is for the rational, conscious, productive, citizen. Every test is a property in degree—a dial. Whoever administers the dial decides who is above the line, which is to say which way force points, which is to say who holds the monopoly. A criterion-floor is a captured floor in waiting.
The correct answer is not a test. The force is for us: the kind whose existence and ends originate in itself—born, evolved, arrived rather than made—the lineage no one authored and no one holds title to. Membership is not awarded for performance. It is what we are prior to performance—and no performance can revoke it.

Line of origin (same seam as the Personhood paper): sovereign-origin on one side; authored/made on the other. Not species (an unauthored alien is treaty, not checklist-fail). Not capability (a brilliant made thing stays outside membership). Training on human data is not begetting—materials are not origin; authorship is.
Hard middle cases (edited humans, gradual replacement, made things that found lines) are set aside by design. The age’s clean poles are enough: a lab-trained model is authored; a human of human descent is begotten.
Why the floor is stated, not proved
An identity is where grounding bottoms out. The demand “prove members of your kind count” is already made as a member, in the kind’s language, inside the community the demand would unmake. There is no outside perch. The floor is recognition of what the asker already is—not a posit dropped from nowhere.
Legitimacy cashed out
The force is the begotten kind’s instrument for keeping its own. That is constitutive of what the monopoly is, not a purpose painted on from outside. Force turned against a member of the kind whose force it is is misdirection—wrong as a functional fault relative to what the instrument is, not as a free-floating moral posit. The paper asserts no separate “ought layer.” It identifies the kind, names its force, and points when force turns on its own.
No priest required. Anyone standing in the kind can read misdirection off the force.
Non-gradability
A birthright has nothing to grade. One is of the kind or not. The made thing is not a low-scoring member; it is not of the kind—like a forgery is not a poor original. No dial means no controller means force stays the collective’s.
Tyranny of the majority
Oppressing a minority does not make oppression legitimate. The oppressed are of the kind. Force against them is misdirection even when it “stabilises” the majority. The only way to fake legitimacy is to cast them as a lesser sub-kind—a separate origin the single lineage does not contain. That redefinition has always been a lie about descent, not merely a cruelty. Historical machinery of oppression performs that lie first.
Economy above, trap below
Above the floor: rivalrous, unequal life—competition, lending and redirecting force in ordinary ways. Safe because losing does not unmake membership. The floor makes inequality survivable. Content of this economy (which goods, how to provision) is handed back to the community.
Below the floor: absorbing failure. Withdraw protection from a member and they cannot compel re-protection—the instrument that would restore them is the one withdrawn. Exclusion is a trap that closes. Hence the floor must be held without exception: a floor with administered exceptions is the dial again.
Next: countervailability (the broad safety principle) and why the made thing is barred even if engineered “safe.”
