5. Doxa: The Shared Background
The forced structure is a substrate. What makes it specifically economic is what fills its slots. One slot carries almost all the distinctive weight: the reference measure µ.
The foundational claim
Economics, foundationally, is the dynamics of bounded-rational choice under a community’s doxa.
- Kinematics forced by the chain.
- Two regimes in τ (warm real life vs zero-temperature ideal).
- Social levels of µ identified with doxa: the unspoken background of expectation that constitutes a shared world.
- Institutions: maintained concentrations of µ.
- Cost of leaving them: the same KL structure that is thermodynamic in physical computation.
- Flourishing (Aristotle’s provisioning sense): sustaining the doxic structure through activity that reproduces it—a content reading, not a forced theorem.
What doxa is (and is not)
The word is Greek. Plato opposed doxa (opinion) to episteme (knowledge). The use here is closer to Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology: something more basic than either opinion or knowledge—the structure of the unspoken, the taken-for-granted, against which both opinion and knowledge form.
Doxa is what nobody argues about because the disagreement would not even register.

| Not this | But this |
|---|---|
| Orthodoxy (what we consciously affirm) | The background that makes affirmation make sense |
| Heterodoxy (conscious dissent) | The substrate orthodox and heterodox still share |
| Preference (what I want) | The background that makes wanting feel sensible |
| Constraint (what’s allowed) | The background that makes constraints feel binding, not arbitrary |
| Knowledge (what I can state) | The background that lets statements cohere |
A religious catechism is orthodoxy. The lived sense that “of course one might have a catechism” is closer to doxa. A rebel disagrees with the orthodox; both still agree, pre-reflectively, what kind of question is at stake. That agreement is doxa.
How it sits in the choice law
ρ ∝ µ × e^{V/τ}
- e^{V/τ} — what you want (value-weighted).
- µ — what you pre-reflectively treat as a sensible kind of thing to be doing.
For a machine-learning reader: the closest analogue is a pretrained model’s implicit distribution over outputs before reward is applied. Doxa is that object at community scale—the unspoken expectations members share.
At high temperature, µ dominates: people do what is expected because computing the valuable is too costly. At low temperature, V dominates: people calculate, with µ only as starting point. Empirical life is in between.
Lower vs upper µ
Not all of µ is “social.” Lower layers are pre-social scaffolding the world supplies:
- bare possibility,
- physical symmetries,
- perceptual salience.
Upper layers are institutional and historical—the part economics especially cares about. Doxa proper lives there. The next chapters say how those layers are built, what capitals keep them alive, and why AI training pipelines are already “doxa engineering” under other names.
Why this returns oikonomia
A community provisions itself for flourishing by sustaining the shared background against which members act. On this identification, provisioning is maintenance of the reference. Bounded choice apparatus becomes communal provisioning apparatus once the reference is read as what a community holds in common.
That is the bridge from Robbins’s scarcity science back to Aristotle’s householding—without throwing away the formal tools.
Next: four capitals that lower the three costs, and three viability laws—flow, openness, resilience—that keep the dynamics from falling apart.
